It is the popular opinion of the public that diamonds are too hard to be damaged. However this is not always the case although currently diamonds are the hardest mineral known to man. A badly cut diamond or a poor quality diamond with cracks is more likely to break than a high quality stone. A simple (but not visible to you) crack tapped against a hard surface a few times can break it into pieces.

Diamonds ARE Susceptible to Damage. Diamonds worn on your right hand ring finger are more vulnerable to damage from everyday activities and chores. Even though you naturally remove your diamonds before cleaning, gardening and other physical activity; your diamonds are more likely to be damaged when worn on your right hand. Even swimming in chlorinated water can cause damage to them - or leave them more prone to damage - as chlorine can damage gold weakening the prongs holding the diamonds on. Which of course will in turn cause breakage to the diamond itself if you bang it up against something or the stone may fall out altogether.
